"These were served to firefighters after having been made for them in a sixth-floor City kitchen during the height of a blitz."The original recipe makes enough to feed an entire fire brigade! It has been divided here to make about a dozen small cakes.

  1. Rub fat into flour and baking powder sieved together.
  2. Add other ingredients, including mashed potato, warmed.
  3. Make to a stiff dough with milk and water as quickly as possible.
  4. Put mixture in small heaps on baking sheet; bake in hot oven (400°F/200°C) 30 minutes.
