This recipe makes a sweet and rich cake without using butter, eggs or milk. It is delicious plain--especially if eaten while still warm!

  1. Grease and flour a nine-inch square baking tin.
  2. Boil sugar, water, raisins and shortening together about 3 minutes until sugar is well dissolved. Put aside until cold.
  3. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  4. Sift flour, baking powder, salt and spices into cooled raisin mixture. Add vanilla extract; then, mix all ingredients well.
  5. Pour batter into baking pan; bake 25 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean.
  6. Allow to cool a few minutes in pan before cutting.
